CTC President’s Report March 2015

Hello CTC Members,

I hope you are having a great Spring.

General Membership Meeting:

On March 8, 2015 we had a really great turnout for our first general membership meeting. By my count it appeared that we had nearly 50 members in attendance.

I would like to express my gratitude to our sponsors:

Madison Bear for allowing us take over their upstairs.

Kristi Ayars, owner of Simply Results Physical Therapy, Inc. Gave an informative presentation on injury prevention and conditioning.

In addition Justin Waller discussed and met with members interested in the intermediate training program.

While Sean Molina discussed and met with those interested in the beginner training program.

Anybody interested in either of these programs please feel free to contact Sean or Justin. The workouts are also posted on the Training page of the website.

Jason Berry announced that the two Club races will be:

The TBF Tri for Fun at Rancho Seco on May 30, 2015

The TRI Club Sprint Triathlon Championship Race on August 15, 2015 at Granite Bay. This race will have a reimbursement package.

Sean Molina, announced the Clubs Practice Tri will be on May 2, 2015 @ Black Butte Lake.

Shawn Hughes will hold a bike skills and maintenance clinic on June 6, 2015 @ 2:00 PM at 1267 Orchard Way, Chico.

Training:

The River Road TTs will begin on April 2, 2015 and continue on the first Thursday of the month until October 1, 2015. CTC will be hosting these TTs for those that have not done one of these yet. It is a great time to test your-self against the clock. Sign up will begin at 5:30 PM.  Riders will start at 6:00 PM. The location will be on 5th St. just as you leave town.

The Friday Rides have begun if you are interested please send an email to Shawn Hughes at president@chicotriathlonclub.com. These rides are great for any rider looking for a mellow afternoon spin and or looking for pointers in ride technique.

CTC Track Workout. Warm-ups begin at 5:45 PM at the PV High School Track. We'll follow with stretching, drills, and some coached workouts for runners of all abilities.

On the Third Thursday of the month, many of us head over to El Patron after the track workout for some refreshments. Since we missed out last week, we are having the Thirsty Third Thursday post workout get together tomorrow. El Patron is a Mexican, order-at-the-counter place in the Safeway shopping center on East Ave. It's at the west end near the gas pumps. For those that just want to show up for the food, we'll probably get there between 6:45 and 7:00 PM. (Thanks Greg Watkins)

Uniforms: The uniforms should arrive around the first week of May.

Athlete of the month: Congratulations to SAMANTHA JENKINS for being voted the athlete of the month in February.

Congratulations to WAYNE PARSONS for being voted the athlete of the month in January.

(We will follow up with awards soon)

Volunteer opportunity: Tony English has created the following list of volunteer opportunities for the Club.

CTC Uniform Order

Hello CTCers,

The Champion-System Online Store is now open to take your orders for custom CTC clothing items! We have redesigned the Tri-Suit...take a look! And now there are two different cycling short designs to choose from, as we brought back the shorts from 2013. Also, there are some really exciting options in addition to the usual triathlon and cycling kit offerings, as you can shop from a full range of performance running gear and casual wear (hoodies, sweatshirts, jackets, long sleeve technical shirts, caps and more). Lastly, I want to thank the CTC Uniform Committee (Tony English, Jacqueline Sasaki, Lisa Collins, & Jenn Moore) & Dragon Graphics for all their hard work in creating the new Tri-Suit design!

THE ONLINE STORE WILL CLOSE ON MARCH 9TH.

You can sample-size the Cycling/Triathlon Jerseys & Shorts at Fleet Feet in downtown Chico.

Here's some tips:

    1) If you are worried about the Tri-Tops showing your belly-button, you should order the long-cut to play-it-safe.

    2) I like the CS Bib Short (cycling shorts) for the men...much less expensive and best fit/look.

Before going to the store, please read the following important notes:

  • To see product descriptions and to compare price and quality of different models (i.e., there are 4 different types of Tri-Tops and Tri-Shorts) go to the website champ-sys.com, choose "USA," then pick a sport (Cycling, Triathlon, Running, or Casual), then click the "CHOOSE YOUR SPORT” dropdown menu. Here you will find detailed information about products you might be interested in ordering from the CTC Custom Store. Take notes about which items that interest you, so you can refer to them when you go to 'Custom Clothing Login' button and begin ordering from the Custom CTC Store.
  • The pricing on the Champ-sys site will be different from that which will be in the Custom CTC Store. Items you buy from in the CTC store will run about $5 to $15 more than the generic retail items to cover the costs of having a custom club store and all the advantages that entails.

1. Go to champ-sys.com, select U.S., then select 'Triathlon', then click on the 'Custom Clothing Login' button, which is on the upper right.

2. First Time Members: In the "CS DIRECT MEMBER LOGIN use the following to get started -- Login: chicotriclub  -- the password: ctc1. Next you will be prompted to create your own account using a new email and password personal to you. Then login again using your new email/password information. Returning members use your existing login information.

PLEASE NOTE: YOU MUST 'CHECK OUT' WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED ORDERING; ANY 'SAVED' ORDERS WILL NOT BE PLACED WHEN THE CART CLOSES!

If you have any problems or have any questions please use my personal e-mail at seanmolina3sport at yahoo dot com.

Have fun!....yer gonna look sooooooo good in this stuff! :)

Club Update

Hello CTC ers we have had a pretty busy start to the year so far.

In December we had our first Board meeting since the End Of The Year Party. We elected our officers as follows:

President: Shawn Hughes

Vice President: Tony English

Treasurer: Jason Berry

Secretary: Jennifer Moore

General Board members:

Becky Hutchinson

Sean Molina

Laura Van Dervoort

Greg Watkins

Justin Waller

I'm looking forward to working with this great group of people in the upcoming year.

Launch Party

On January 8th Fleet feet once again hosted a great launch party for us. We had a huge turnout and welcomed some new members to our club.

Events:

CTC had a great turnout at the annual Polar Bear swim on New Years Day.

We also had very strong showing as both competitors and volunteers for Under the Sun Events' annual Frost or Fog run in Upper Park.

General Meeting:

We will be hosting our first general meeting of the year on March 8, at Madison Bear. The meeting will start at 2:00 PM. Come and hear a presentation by Jenny Barker on nutrition. We will also discuss key club races, training programs, uniforms, and much more.

Training:

Sean Molina has put together a list of club workouts for us.  I have included it below for you, If you get a chance I would encourage you to try and come out to some. I would also like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Sean Molina for putting this synopsis together for all of us. I know it must have taken a lot time and work on his part. So lets show our appreciation and try to show up for as many as we can.

2015 CTC WORKOUT SYNOPSIS:  (There is more info here: http://www.chicotriathlonclub.com/workouts/)

SWIMMING

FRIDAY SWIM: One-Mile, Friday 7:00am (starts May 29). If you are new to open-water swimming, this may be your most important training session. Along with getting some swim cardio done, workout leader Becky Hutchison will be there to help you with swimming mechanics as well as teach you to deal with some of the challenging aspects of open water group racing. I will (are you sitting down?) be there as well for some of these sessions to help give folks even more individual attention. I may even show-up with my former-world-record-holder/Olympic-silver-medalist neighbor, but I may have to double my offer of one month's free yard work to get her to bite...we'll see. Additionally, we almost always have many experienced triathletes out there who will happily mentor and welcome you.

CYCLING

FRIDAY RIDE: Shawn S. Hughes' House, Friday 4:00pm (starts March 27). This is an invaluable and very inclusive training session, particularly for anyone who has felt intimidated by some of the other community-based group rides in town. Your workout leader, and new CTC President, Shawn Hughes does a fantastic job of mentoring bike skills, keeping the pace appropriate, keeping safety first, and having fun! The pace will be no faster than the least fit rider, so everyone stays together to the end. The time in-the-saddle is generally about 90 minutes.

FUN & FIT 50, or Tri 50: Rosedale Elementary, Wednesday 5:30pm (starts March 11). The Fun & Fit 50 group rides are community-based rides that averages between 15 to 50 riders in the group. The Fit 50 is good for experienced group riders that have good goup riding skills and very good fitness levels. The Fun 50 is a great place to start out after you have developed some basic group riding skills and want to ride at a more relaxed pace. The Tri 50 will be something that some of us from the CTC would like to develop depending on the interest level. Becky Hutchison will see if she can build this ride with a small core of folks and see "where it goes." Watch for more on this later on our yahoogroups e-mail communications. This ride will be more Tri-Bike oriented, but will certainly be inclusive to anyone interested.

TEAM PRIDE PRACTICE RIDES: Chico Jr. High Bike Racks, Mon. & Thurs. 3:00pm-5:00pm. If you have a young person that you'd like to have learn cycling skills and get a great workout, here's an awesome opportunity. 5th grade Citrus Teacher Ray Bransky is a fantastic bike skills teacher and all-around super nice guy, and will have help from other adults to lead a small group ride. Ray hopes to instill in young people a love of cycling and being active and healthy, which can have positive lifelong ramifications. Please contact Ray at thebranskys@gmail.com if you're interested.

RUNNING

TRACK WORKOUT: P.V. High School, Thurdays 5:45pm (starts March 19). I highly encourage all levels of runners to come out and benefit from this low-key and fun workout session. I promise you you'll enjoy the company, camaraderie, and encouragement from some really neat folks smile emoticon You are more than welcome to do your own workout, or you could ask me for one. And remember, you don't have to kill yourself to benefit from the track. Even if you just did the Warm-Up/Stretch/Drills portions and then brought out your best "running self" for a couple of laps around the track, you'd benefit greatly...I promise! You get in, get out, and you GET BETTER! This year there will be two new workout leaders in addition to Dave Bruhn and I. Josh Rowe and Jason Berry will bring their passion and experience to help you get the most out of your session and have fun!

LSD RUN: Five-Mile Bidwell Park, Saturday 8:00am (ongoing). There is no better way to start the day than an easy-going morning run in Upper Bidwell Park! Standout triathlon veteran Greg Watkins will be your workout leader and will welcome ALL levels of runners for a low (sometimes medium) intensity fat-burner with a social atmosphere. This year, board member Tony English will facilitate a run for those who would like to run a shorter and slower pace.

Let's have a great Tri-Year!
