Ukiah Triathlon Race Report

The Ukiah triathlon is one of my favorites. I say that about all the triathlons I've done, of course —except Auburn— but really, Ukiah is one of my favorites. This was our third time racing it. It's a long sprint: the usual half-mile swim and 5k run, but a 22-mile bike leg through what I'm told is the prettiest bike course around. It's a great first triathlon, in some pretty wine country, and it's just a short drive from some densely populated areas.

The problem with being a great first triathlon in a destination location within a short drive of population centers is that you get a LOT of first-time triathletes. If you're starting the swim back in the "guys old enough to know better" wave, you spend a lot of the swim dodging first-timers doing the breaststroke. Or backstroke. Or both simultaneously, although I had not previously considered whether this was even possible.

The water in Lake Mendocino offers three-foot visibility at best, so you don't get much advance warning when overtaking slow swimmers. But today I caught a good pair of feet early in the race that were swimming just a tad faster than I've have swam by myself. I followed them closely, and when they would suddenly dodge to one side I learned almost immediately to just do the same and figure out why later. I don't have official splits yet, but I think I did fairly well on the swim. It felt fast, but not tiring.

The bike course has some rollers through —I'm told— beautiful vineyards. That may be true... all I remember from any of the times I've done this race is that there's pavement, with some rollers, and there were people in front of me. This time, as always, most of those people were from the previous waves of young punks and relay teams, but one of them was a guy in my age group and we got into it early. He was short, stocky, and shaped vaguely like some variety of aquatic mammal; but despite this he tended to take lead on the uphill sections which should have given me advance notice that I was in trouble! We traded leads at least a half-dozen times throughout the bike leg, and generally stayed within a hundred yards of each other. I know I wouldn't have ridden as fast if he wasn't there! On the last slope up into T2 he stood up and dropped me, but I wasn't worried because I knew I could catch him on the run.

I was wrong. He was in sight at the start of my run, and I passed a half-dozen others in my efforts to reel him in, but he was still pulling away at the end. We talked after the race, and his comment was "Yeah, biking is my weakest leg, but I knew if I was anywhere near you at the start of the run I'd have you." Here he was, three inches shorter and maybe 50 pounds heavier than me, telling me with a straight face that he knew he could outrun me... and dang it he was right!

My previous best showing in this race was fourth in my age group: this year, with all the effort of trying to match this guy, I was a minute faster than my previous best time on the course, and ... fourth in my age group again. The race has gotten faster: last year I was slower and 15th overall: this year I finished 16-17th or so. (Official results aren't posted yet.) But a good race nevertheless, and I'm happy with my personal improvement.

Kristi also PR'd the course by about a minute, finishing 5th in her age group. Her comment: "I remember this course having a lot more hills, but it's really not that bad." This is her 8th —yes, EIGHTH— triathlon of the year; Obviously the training volume she's putting in every week works.

I highly recommend this triathlon for those dumb enough to race on back-to-back weekends — it's unfortunately always the weekend after Tin Man. If you can take off work the Monday after the race, there are some beautiful views and world-class wineries in the area. Check it out, it's a fun race.

CTC Update for the week of 8/27

Happy training for the week of 8/27.

Mount Shasta Tinman:  Coming up Sunday is the next CTC club race, the Mount Shasta Tinman.  Online registration has closed and there will be no race day registration, but according to a website update on 8/27, the race has not yet filled and mail-in entries are still being accepted.  If you haven't already registered and plan to mail in an entry form, I suggest you contact Will Newman (Tinman@willnewman.com) to confirm your entry.  Look for a posting to the Yahoo Group later this week with more details on the pre and post race festivities.

Age Group Nationals:  Al Masterson (Olympic) and Shawn Hughes (Sprint) competed at the USAT National Age Group Championships in Burlington Vermont last weekend.  That's Al's picture on the front page of the Burlington Free Press.  Results from the event have been posted to the Results page of the website.

Ironman Utah:  A long overdue recognition goes out to Blake Anderson for completing Ironman St. George back in May.  Blake's results have been posted to the Results page of the website.  Sorry for the oversight, Blake.

General Meeting:  We had a great turnout for the general membership meeting on Sunday.  Nearly forty people enjoyed the pool, BBQ, great weather, and the camaraderie of their fellow CTC members.  Thanks again to Shawn, Joanne, and Lynn for hosting a great event.

CTC Gear:  As announced at the general meeting, CTC will soon have a new vendor for general clothing items such as T-shirts, hoodies, jackets, etc...  There will be an online ordering system with no minimums that will open a couple of times a year.  Look for more announcements soon.  In the meantime, we still have a lot of cool gear (shirts, sweatshirts, visors, tri kits, etc.) for sale at North Rim (178 E. 2nd St.).  These items are made available at cost as a service to current club members.

Membership Status: We have recently transitioned membership database responsibilities.  During the transition, some renewal notices were not sent out on time and in other cases, the processing of paid renewals and memberships was delayed.  We appreciate your patience during this time and believe that everything is now up to date.  Members can always check their membership status on the Membership page of the website.  Please direct any membership related questions to membership@chicotriathlonclub.com.

CTC Update for the week of 8/13

Happy training for the week of 8/13.  The Prez has been on vacation, so apologies for the delay since the last update.

Next General Meeting: The next CTC general membership meeting is coming up soon!  It will take place Sunday August 26th at 3:00 PM at the home of Shawn Hughes and Joanne Gilchrist (1267 Orchard Way).  CTC Member Ryan Santanna-Hart will give a talk on Nutrition Needs for Triathletes and the general membership will be asked to vote on a proposal of financial support for Girls on the Run of Butte County.  Please plan to attend this important meeting.  More details to follow.

Tri for Fun:  CTC was well represented at our most recent club race, the August 4th Tri for Fun Sprint Triathlon at Rancho Seco.  Racers included Shawn H., Jason B., Christina P., Mitch H., Mike M., Stefanie O., Dina R., Christine M., and Laura V (hope I didn't miss anybody).  Josh R. also traveled to Rancho Seco and volunteered.  Results have been posted to the Results page of the website.  Pictures from the event (thanks to Laura V.) have been posted to the Gallery page of the website.  Jason Berry's Race Report has also been posted.

Next Club Race – Mount Shasta Tinman:  I just received notice from the Mount Shasta Tinman Race Director that the race is about to fill, and he wanted me to encourage all CTC members to register as soon as possible.  The race takes place on September 2nd, the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.  It has been a club tradition since our very first year and is always a great event for CTC.  Several members will camp the night before and a post race feast will be arranged by the club.  Look for more announcements on camping, lodging, and other club activities as the race date approaches, but Register Now!

Final Club Race – Granite Bay:  Our final club race of the year is Granite Bay on September 23rd, which is the California Sprint Distance TRI Club Championship.  Championship Points are awarded for all participants, regardless of finish time, so the more racers we have, the better our chances.  CTC finished second last year by a single point, just missing out on $500, a Huge TRI Club Trophy, and reserved bike racks next year at all TBF Racing triathlons.

More Pictures:  Thanks to Laura V. and Jason B., pictures from the May 26th General Meeting and the July 15th Vineman 70.3 have been posted to the Gallery page of the website.

CTC Gear at Northrim: CTC has lots of cool gear (shirts, sweatshirts, visors, tri kits, etc.) for sale at North Rim (178 E. 2nd St.).  These items are made available at cost as a service to current club members.

Xterra Wetsuits:  Xterra Wetsuits is a sponsor of the Chico Triathlon Club and is offering up to 60% off with free shipping to club members.  Orders can be placed through this website.  If you'd like the code, just send an email to president@chicotriathlonclub.com.

Triathlon at Pacific Grove:  CTC has been offered a $25 discount for the Triathlon at Pacific Grove which has Olympic and sprint events on September 8-9 in Pacific Grove.  Use the code CLUB2512 to get the discount.
